1. 2500 BC – 1700 BC

a. The events of this period are known to Indians as the First War of Independence and the War of Independence of 1857 and to the British as the Indian Mutiny or the Sepoy Mutiny/Sepoy Rebellion or the Great Mutiny ("sepoy" from sipahi, Hindi for soldier, used for native Indian soldiers).

2. 327 BC – 325 BC

b. The “Government of India” Act established a “diarchy ” in which elected Indian rulers shared power with appointed/chosen British governors and ministers.

3. 1757

c. The Indian Congress firmly demanded that the British leave India. Great Britain responded by outlawing the Congress and jailing Gandhi and other leaders.

4. By 1818

d. British India was divided into India and Pakistan. 

5. 1857

e. Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic.

6. 1919

f. President ABDUL KALAM was elected.

7. Late 1919

g. India gained independence from Britain.

8. 1937

h.The beginning of the British Empire in India.

9. 1942

i. Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh members of her personal guard.

10. 1947

j. By this time, the British controlled most of India, south of the Sutlej river.

11. August 1947

k. In the elections of Mar., 1971, the New Congress and Mrs. Indira Gandhi won an overwhelming victory.

12. January 1948

l. Mohandas Gandhi organized the first of many passive resistance campaigns.

13. March 1971

m. The Indian Congress, led by Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, won the first election and took over half the seats.

14. 1984

n. Alexander the Great invaded the region.

15. July 2002
